Background
The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa enacted the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA - Act 4 of 2013), with the bulk of sections commencing on 1 July 2020, effectively ushering South Africa based organizations into the new era of data privacy. Organizations have been granted a grace period of one year to normalize and implement the requirements of the law within their risk and compliance frameworks, and have to be able to demonstrate compliance by 1 July2021. Likelihood of non-compliance is high with a potential impact of R10 m. The result is a key risk that should be on the audit plan.
