As Chairperson of the GRC Conference in Cape Town, I believe the conversation around Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) has entered a defining new era — one shaped profoundly by Artificial Intelligence. AI is no longer a future concept reserved for technology firms; it is now embedded in decision-making, operations, assurance, cybersecurity, ESG reporting, fraud detection, and strategic leadership across every sector. This creates enormous opportunity, but also unprecedented governance responsibility.
Boards, executives, risk professionals and assurance leaders are now confronted with critical questions: How do we govern AI ethically? How do we manage algorithmic bias, privacy exposure, cybersecurity vulnerabilities and regulatory uncertainty? How do organisations balance innovation with accountability? These are no longer technology questions alone — they are governance imperatives.
Modern GRC frameworks must therefore evolve from traditional compliance models into integrated, intelligence-driven systems capable of overseeing AI risk, digital ethics and organisational resilience. Frameworks such as KING V, ISO 42001 and integrated ESG governance are becoming essential tools for boards seeking to establish trust, transparency and sustainable value creation in the digital economy.
At this year’s conference, hosted in the dynamic business hub of Cape Town, we engaged with thought leaders, regulators, internal auditors, risk practitioners, academics and executives to explore how AI is reshaping governance across Africa and globally. The objective was not simply to discuss technology, but to redefine leadership in an age where human judgment and artificial intelligence must coexist responsibly.
The future of GRC will belong to organisations that can integrate governance, ethics, innovation and human-centred leadership into one strategic framework. AI will not replace leaders — but leaders who understand AI governance will shape the future of resilient, trusted and sustainable organisations.
